I have a time that automatically qualifies me for entry into NYC marathon. Tell me why this race is worth $300.

Magnolia will give you a free cupcake after finish if you show your bib/medal
I was in New York during marathon, but not racing it. The atmosphere was great, and I'm really itching to run it in the future. But I agree, $300 is a bit steep. If you're living comfortably right now, I'd say go ahead and commit to it. If that $300 could really come in handy this year then maybe don't spend $300 on anything that isn't a necessity.
NYC Marathon is a fantastic race. You'll remember it forever. People spend $300 on a lot dumber stuff on a consistent basis, just sign up.
The crowds and Brooklyn are worth $300, that isn't the question. Is it worth the cold wait at the start before the race is the question. I love the race, but it is over 10 years since I said I would never do it again. I plan to do it next year.
It is a lot more than $300 if you need to pay for a place to stay. But is a bucket list race that is nice to be able to say you've done.
They have to make up the lost revenue from not being able to charge to enter the lottery.

^^ this is it.
On the cheap, it will cost about a grand to fly/eat/hotel/race.
True story: my fiancee has a part time job and otherwise bullsh*ts around window shopping and socializing. She gave me $300 to "hold on to" for her Boston entry and related costs. However, shes racked up more than $300 on her daily, sometimes twice a day venti frappuccino habit..

It's not worth it, especially if you have run NYC marathon before.
But I also feel that most city marathons are way too expensive for what they offer.
Just do the Disney Princess Half instead

That's why therapy is so expensive.
DONT ENTER.
They will fill up and don’t need your money. If it is not worth it to you then don’t pay it.
Same with those Disney Events. If I were the race I would double the cost.
I can imagine the organizers' conversation: we moved the price up to $300 and it was oversold.
How high can we go? Can we try $500 next year? Let's see if we can get a bigger cut from the local businesses too. We bring them a clientele that is definitely willing to spend big bucs.
So, if you think that $300 is steep, the best thing you could do is not go.
I just bandit the Disney 1/2. Ran 1:19+ last year and was about 30 seconds in front of the lead woman, whom everyone was watching. I just bailed before the finish line and saved some coin to use elsewhere.
No you didn’t.

Do you have the unmitigated gall to imply that an LRC poster would lie?

Yes I did.
1. bucket list crap
2. competition - for true competition your choices for fall marathons in the US are NYC, Chicago, CIM, Philly, and Honolulu - look at one of the others instead of nyc if you want
if you don't see either of these as worth the entry fee, run some other race

Don't have to. I ran less than a minute ahead of the first female, Dani. I peeled off about 100 yards short and ran on the side till I was lined up with the finish line. Very easy and I saved $199 and didn't take any prize money from anybody.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
