I have been running since middle school, but didn't start seriously training until about a year ago; I favor 800/1500. Since then, I have made respectable PRs considering my amount of time training, but I am capable of more. I used to play other sports, and weight trained in the past as well as a lot of calisthenics exercises. Because of the lack of leg exercises I did when I prioritized lifting, my upper body is noticeable bigger than my lower body; certainly not ideal for a runner.
I increased my mileage a few months ago and everything was going fine until I ramped it up a bit too quickly and got some painful knee and calf aches. Because of that mileage, there was lots of blood flow going through my legs, and they definitely got bigger as a result. After being out for a while, my legs atrophied a bit and it is not functional for a runner to be so top heavy.
I was able to come back to running a few days ago and have been feeling fine for the most part, but my legs are seriously taking a beating. I am currently restricting my calories a bit to lose overall body fat, but I need to get bigger legs to balance me out, how can I do this in a calorie deficit?
To sum it all up, is there a way to put on a bit of lean muscle on my legs (primarily calves) while losing body fat?
I really appreciate your 2 cents.
