FWIW, College Head Coach: I respond to 100% of the emails I receive. If you are a 29:51 5K girl, I personally respond. Who knows, maybe you have a Soph. sister running sub 18:30 and they take notice? I have been at my current college for 4 years. My university hired an outside agency to run our website. They are terrible. If you fill out our recruiting questionnaire, I will receive an excel spreadsheet of everyone that filled the questionnaire out the past 12 months maybe 1 time per year. So if you fill it out in January of 2019, I will see it in December of 2019 (11 months later) I have brought this up to our University countless times but there has yet to be a change. With that being said, I probably would have signed 1 person in 4 years that filled out the questionnaire as most if not all were academic fits but poor runners (Sr. Boy running 5:39 for the 1600M) Just email the coach directly.
Why would a coach contact the high school coach first?
a) I do it out of respect for the current coach as I do not want him-her thinking I am recruiting around their back
b) I want to establish a relationship with the HS coach for future recruits or maybe another current athlete on the team
c) I know you told me how great a person you are but I want to hear it from your coach (I will ask about your character, work ethic, willingness to listen-learn, ability to get along with teammates etc.)
Good luck!
