I am literally holding the book My Marathon by Frank Shorter as I am typing this. And in it he litteraly says he and Prefontaine spent a month or so at a ski resort doing a run in the morning, a run in the evening and sandwich it with skiing in the middle. From what I've read, the Flying Finns spent a lot of time XC skiing in the winter.
If you're trying to not lose any fitness, yeah of course you need to run. Downhill skiing wasn't a workout in my book when I was running a lot. I agree with the folks saying get it out of the in the morning as it's pretty hard to want to get out there after a long day on the hill. No matter what you do you're going to be sore your first few days skiing. Luckily, they're not really the same muscles that would make you unable to jog a bit.
