No, I'm not going to try to change your mind...because you are absolutely, 100 percent correct. Quite frankly and realistically, 40 mpw is all anyone needs to race at his/her best for any distance up to 10K. All the high-mileage whackos who would have you believe otherwise are merely sheep who've been drinking the "100+ mpw Kool-Aid" for their entire lives. (They have lots of time to read those ridiculous training philosophies because they're always injured.)
Yeah, I know it's a cliché, but a runner should always...always...always focus on quality over quantity. Running 5-6 days/week with one blistering track session, one fartlek workout and one long/tempo run of no more than 8 miles will get you where you want to be.
