So sick: Syracuse's Justyn Knight ran 3:39 and 13:34 on 35 mpw

As much as I hate the skepticism and hate on this board, I have a REALLY hard time believing/grasping the fact that he ran 13:34 on 35 mpw.

I don't see any reason for Fox to lie about it, and maybe Knight is the next STAR, but there has to be some exaggeration in there.

I want to know how you run 50-60mpw with doubles. Do you actually have days were you run 3 in the morning and 4 at night? How else do you keep the average that low ?

Frankly unless you see a full 12+ weeks of continous training I would be skeptical of reading too much into various one off comments. Who knows what that comment includes for mileage (do morning runs, warmups, sunday runs away from the team,....) and what they are measuring (35 mpw every week over 52 weeks is a lot different that 70mpw for 26 and 0 for 26 because of injury even though they both give you a 35mpw average)

I assume it's just a misinterpretation of what was written.

Fox says Knight ran 35 mpw last year - meaning calendar year. Last year, was 2014 so when Knight was in HS for track.

So he ran 35 mpw in HS most likely. Now he's up to 50-60 so i imagine last spring he was maybe 50ish? I always felt when I was coaching that nearly everyone could handle a 10-15 mpw increase, maybe even more if they were incredibly low mileage.

Regardless it's impressive. A future NCAA champ for sure barring injury or some Cheserek type Kenyan coming in behind him in his exact event group.

18 miles on workout days and 50-60 for the week? Seems like doing 1/3 of your weekly mileage in one day would be unusual.

Justyn has reached 17-18 miles only a handful of times during his time at cuse. This fall season his normal runs have been around 45-50 minutes at most, with recovery days varying from 35-40 min. Workout days generally include a 20 min morning run with a hard session in the early evening.

I think the first poster is off based. I've met Knight a few times. He's pretty skinny. I dont' think he'd be very good at the discus.

Then again, Syracuse put up zero marks in the discus last year in track so it might benefitial for hiim to learn it in case they have a scored dual meet.

Yeah, most of his runs are around 5:30 pace. Morning doubles are slower, closer to 6:15 pace.

You could certainly be right, but when any coach or athlete says, "Last year ..." I always feel they are referring to the last year of competition as in 2014-2015 school year.

I also watched the interview and felt he was talking about "last year" as in XC season 2014 and track season 2015.

Just don't see how anyone could be that good off 35 mpw. I am not saying that he is NOT, I am saying it is amazing. I ran more than 35 mpw in 7th grade in order to run 38:00 10ks.

Bannister ran sub-4 on cinders twice running 35 miles per week or fewer. Heck, even Landy only ran 55 or so.

Every so often a supreme talent shows up, and Knight certainly looks like he has the talent to run very fast off low mileage. Can he handle 10 years of hard training building up to 100 miles a week? Will he respond well to the increased training? Will he plateau? You need a lot of different types of talent to make it at the top level. Knight certainly has a couple types in spades.

What I think you are wondering is whether he looked relaxed?

It's pretty easy to go back and see that last year, Justin and Fox say he was closer to 50. Even the way he talks in the interview, Fox is clearly exaggerating to make a point. Like somebody saying "My life is way more balanced now, I never had free time last year."

If he is running most days at 5:30 pace for 45-50 minutes its not absurd to think he can run 4:45 pace for 24 minutes on race days.
