It was extremely disappointing to have no coverage of the US runners other than Shalane at the end. No coverage of the exciting race between the US men. It's saddening and frustrating how bad these races are covered.

ESPN thinks that would be too nationalist

John Anderson, the commentator of Wipeout. Just dumb! Time for these events to negotiate that the coverage is done better.
It was a shame. I like how the European coverage usually has a camera on the top guy from the host country. I was following the live tracker and was really hoping to see a minute or three of the American men coming down the finish straight. Instead, the ESPN guy, Hutchings and Carrie were in an extended chat at the time.
At least they interviewed Ward.
What "exciting race between the American men?" Like over a mile behind the leaders?
If they did focus on the US runners, then everyone would complain that they were not covering the real racing up front. Admit that the US athletes were largely also rans. The racing up front was far more exciting...because it was RACING.

Thread title says “cover the US runners better”, not “focus”
This is a US race and thus has a wide US audience who would naturally be interested in US runners. Nothing wrong with that. Just last month at the Amsterdam marathon the tv coverage rightfully focused on the leaders but would occasionally drop back to provide updates on the leading Dutch runners. It was quite interesting actually. Most of the Dutch ran in a pack except for one who took off on his own and ran solo most of the way. He was reeled in with about 4 miles to go
I'll go with "ESPN blows" for $500, Alex

make them sit down and watch any stage of NBC coverage of the Tour de France and they will see how to cover a race

ESPN 2 covered the American women well but ignored the men.
John Anderson was annoying.
There was one point where a move was being made, I can't remember which one, he was talking crap about nothing finally Hutchings (?) broke in and called the race.
Overall I thought the coverage wasn't horrible, better than usual, but get rid of Anderson.

I had to DVR and watch it later.....which I could do in less than 90 minutes once I fordwarded through the commercials. Plus, every time they went to Sage Steele, I could fast forward for about 2 minutes of a BS "regular runner" profile.
I did think Centro was better than I expected he would be.
I agree that during a 2 hour race, they could take 30 seconds once or twice to show the Americans. They find time for every human interest story.
