I don't know if she's fabricating - sometimes you see sprinters have 'hamstring' issues when they know they are losing, and I wouldn't put it past any runner to do a similar thing. That said, I have known at least 1 sub-2:22 guy run a 2:40+'ish time because he had to slow / stop every mile or so for the last several miles due to his legs unexpectedly tightening up. He cared in the sense that it was a bad performance for him, but he didn't care in the sense of it wasn't a major race for him. Since he wasn't pro and times didn't matter anyway, he just finished the race instead of DNF'ing. His explanation wasn't really an excuse - it was just an obvious explanation since he had a portfolio of better times. With Alexi, time will tell.

How does one resolve a hamstring problem? If it persists after time and a lot of stretching and strengthening P.T. what's the next step? Is there scar tissue that has to be broken up through ultra sound and deep massage? Can it be surgically removed? What is one to do with such a persistent problem?
