Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and comedian Dave Chappelle are among eight people being saluted by Harvard University for their contributions to black history and culture.
The eight recipients of the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal are being honored Thursday afternoon by the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard.
Kaepernick, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, created a firestorm when he began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest police brutality and social injustice.
The other honorees are Kenneth Chenault, chairman and a managing director of General Catalyst; Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Pamela Joyner, founder of Avid Partners, LLC; psychologist and author Florence Ladd; Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative; and artist Kehinde Wiley.

...and why exactly did you post this on a running site?
-
Come on guy, there are TONS of threads here all the time thaT have...0....to do with running and you know it.
Favorite female singers?
This place is more about runners meeting to visit, you really haven't figured that out?

Ok, the topic of this thread.
When does a black man take a knee protesting the REAL problem? That would be 75% of black children raised in one parent homes. That is the problem.
My son is a good kid but at around 15ish there is no way my wife could have handled him, If he wanted to go run the streets who is stopping him? Totally different deal with a dad around..........where ya going, no you're not......and that's that.
Kaepernick needed a teammate....what are you doing? Dude, stand your azz up don't play that BS here. -
Congratulations to Colin on receiving this great award.
May he continue to shine light on the very real police problem in this country. -
He may have been a superbowl loser, but I'd never seen a quarterback performance as good as Kaepernick in that Packer game. He not only ran at will, he hit every clutch pass right on. I thought he'd rule the league and was surprised he faded out so quickly.
I didn't know he was black until he started the protests. His name is "Kaepernick", he has white parents (adopted), and he didn't look black before the afro.
I'm indifferent on the protests. -

May he stand up and protest the real problem with the black community. Stand up against the black men abandoning their families, stand up for the black men killing other black men. Stop playing the victim. -

Interesting. And interesting that Kanye basically said exactly this, but was labeled "mentally ill". -

Ahhh, right... "police problem". Interestingly enough, those same police, are largely members pf unions that vote for the same politicians that have dominated black America for decades. The same politicians that raise their fist at the police. hmmm -

The police problem has nothing to do with skin color. Their abuse of power extends to everyone. -
How deep does it go? wrote:

There’s a name for people who don’t truly believe there’s a big problem with police abuse these days - cops. -
There is a name for people who don't think the problem in the black community starts at home and that is........
-
I'd be pretty peeved if I was one of the people on that list who actually achieved something.

That's pathetic that you represent CK's football career in that way.
I take it we can sum up your running career as "loser" since you have never won an Olympic gold? -

I agree that there is a problem with the relationship between some police officers and black Americans. However, Kaepernick's protests have only triggered an endless debate over whether he is disrespecting the miltary and our country and what the NFL owners should do about it. -

The second sentence is true. But marginalized people are more vulnerable to it these abuses.
Trust me, my wealthy white uncle and my poor black uncle, both of them solid hard-working guys without a parking ticket in their history, have very different experiences with police. -
I thought you have a lower than average IQ. The more you post, the more I am certain you are not too bright. Kaepernick is supposed to fix the fact that cops and CPS break up black families in US on an hourly basis?

Kaepernick really looked good those first two years, and I was a fan. Harbaugh loved him and it looked like a good player-coach relationship. I'm not sure what happened but he got way worse pretty soon. -
WEB Dubios? Is the guy who invented the peanut?

After thinking it over, i like this award for him.
Every time we talk police violence, somewhere, someone brings up Kaepernick.
Every time we bring up Kaepernick, someone brings up police violence.
This is the kind of dialogue and message that the award recognizes.
Plus, as a caucasian-mixed race, he is speaking against his culture in those who brutalize.
As an African-American -mixed race, he is speaking in favor of his culture by showing his solidarity in their struggle.
They honored, among others, the right person at this time. -
Trust me if young black boys had fathers at home with them, we wouldn't see all the problems we do. Simply common sense.
If that has to be explained to you ya might wanna cool this IQ talk.
