Look this probably isn't the right time for this but when is? We don't like to talk about these things and then we're left with remembering history differently than it was. We're left with an appreciation thread that only says positive things when these things matter too.

We can respect him as a military hero but all of this support feels a bit theatrical. He treated his first wife like garbage. How do we just say nice things about him like that doesn't matter? We need better role models. We need to value women more.

I disagreed with him on most things and I agree with some on here re: his personal life (though I do think it’s in bad taste to focus on the latter right now). But, his firm grounding in reality and unwillingness to use outlandish conspiracy theories to his political advantage does make him stand out among the current crop of GOP politicians. Truth is truth and reality is reality. McCain understood that and for that he had my respect.

Where's the balance though? This thread was created to honor him. Do we honor him and ignore the fact that he was a womanizer who treated his first wife despicably?

An article like this won't be written about me. Do we just choose to ignore this out of respect and only talk about positive things? It just feels like we're sweeping bad behavior towards women under the rug. Don't talk about that because then we would have to address it.

I honored him because of his death, not for his life. If you want to focus on his life in a ‘balanced’ way, do a comprehensive analysis. Posters who argue one way or the other and selectively omit contradictory acts are biased and will not produce a ‘balanced’ analysis.

I'm confused , so your telling me he WAS just like every Republican in congress .

On leaving his first wife: I’m of the opinion that people should only be in relationships if they want to be in them. Yes, it’s noble to stay with someone forever out of obligation even if you’re unhappy because you promised you would when you were 25 years old, but you get one life here.

People who cheat violate a trust, but it’s indicative of needing something in the relationship or themselves. People are human and have needs.

He could have been better about the cheating but if someone has reached the point of cheating that relationship is over anyway.

Just my opinion. You feel what you feel. No one should be obligated to stay with anyone else.

I agree that he should be crucified for the war mongering though.

If the Nuremberg Trials were held today for the US war machine, I'm pretty sure they would come to the same conclusion as they did after the end of WWII. Also, I don't recall people ever saying that we should honor the dead war criminals of the German regime that was in power between 1934-1945.

You are absolutely right. It is wrong to focus on his personal life at this time. His warmongering and dragging US politics down by choosing Palin as his Presidential running mate are far more serious.

Due to the fact he became a closeted Democrat the past few years and absolutely hated Trump, the MSM and Democrats have gone WAY overboard with the accolades in the past 24 hours. No talk of killing sailors on the Forrestal, dumping his ex wife after the car wreck, nor his role in the Keating scandal. And, I think he was a supreme jerk for not resigning his seat so someone can actually represent AZ residents.

Outrageous nonsense. He was not only a public figure, but a powerful politicians who affected billions of people. Nobody should be intimidated into moderating their comments under any circumstances.
