There is no doubt that Trump surrounded himself with cronies. The question is whether it was purposeful or whether he knew what he was doing. We all know that most reputable Republicans did not support his campaign, which raises the question of who exactly did support his campaign. And this was at a time of unprecedented splintering in the party where there were numerous other options to pick before Trump. So who went to him? It was opportunistic people or else people who needed it desperately. We all basically accept this as a fact and it is why we can actually entertain a discussion about whether Trump knew who he was hiring when he picked Manafort to head his campaign. Before we go further on Manafort, let's not mince words that America on the whole when determining Trump's ignorance (conservatives) or possible motive (liberals) intuitively accepts that Trump attracted low quality help.
Trump himself might be called a bit of an opportunist. Recall that he previously ran as a Reform Party candidate where he championed things like campaign finance reform. He was quite moderate. He was nothing like the Breitbart, base-stirring firebrand who presented himself for the 2016 election. You can trace Trump's seriousness back to precisely the moment during all the birther controversy where Obama roasted Trump. That was the precise moment -- one full of spite -- Trump went all-in on allying himself with the conservative base to lambast Obama. By any measure his next presidential campaign was just going to be a money grab and brand building experience at the expense of Obama.
Except a lot of people wanted him to succeed at hurting Obama and later HRC. Conservatives obviously wanted that. Big money conservatives in charge of corporations and politics certainly wanted to emphasize this through ads, articles, and talking points. But you need to consider who outside the country has an interest, too.
Russia had no love for Obama and no love for HRC, who was Secretary of State and consistently spoke out against Russia. Naturally the Russians want to get involved whether Trump cares to work with them or not. So you see the Russians begin to campaign against HRC. They fund hacks and fake articles. They invite people like Jill Stein (who will pull votes from HRC) to several events and give her validity. Probably the best picture of the era is the dinner table photo that includes Putin, Stein, and Michael Flynn. Russia was courting its own agenda whether anyone benefitting from it realized it or not at the time.
Let's look at Steele for a moment. Let's suppose he's a full-on British agent who the government ordered to push pro-HRC causes because that's how Britain was allied at the time. Let's go all-in on a conspiracy there. Sadly for conservatives, no laws were broken, because Steele and Britain did not give the U.S. money during all that. Everyone expects an agenda. What matters is money. Steele doesn't matter because he didn't pay anyone to exercise influence.
But did Russia? Well, Manafort accepted money from Ukrainian officials loyal to Russia, which is why Manafort pursued a pro-Russia agenda. Can we prove whether any of the Russian money made it directly to Manafort? Maybe. We already know Cohen took money from middle eastern countries, AT&T, and others under the guise of consulting when he would specifically point out to these entities that he works directly for President Trump. Were there any deals like this that came from the Russians? Carter Page spoke in Russia on their state news. Maybe he was paid at the time for some of his work. Are we to believe the Russians never paid him for anything just before or during the campaign? There are many people in the campaign for whom we can ask this.
But let's look directly at Trump. I'm out of time, so I have to do it in bullet form:
-Moscow Trump Tower discussions
-Trump SoHo -- other real estate deals with Russians to finance projects elsewhere
-Miss Universe pageant and efforts to involve Putin
-The dozens of shell companies owned by Trump
These are all ways Russia could have funneled money to Trump that he would have known about and been complicit in accepting.
