I'm driving across the country and today listened to a ton of talk radio today which mainly is conservative, but I also have Sirius XM so I listened to Rachel Maddow and there are 2 totally different version of reality out there on the political opinion shows.
I got curious what LetsRunners thought about the latest political developments in particular the Mannafort guilty conviction and Cohen pleading guilty to a campaign finance felony on behalf of the president. I know the mods try and keep most of the political stuff in Trump Inauguration thread, but major developments like this deserve their own threads.
Plus, as my experiment listening to the news today shows, a lot of people just hear news from their echo chamber. There aren't a lot of places where people of different viewpoints discuss the latest developments.
Try and keep this civil. Please report posts that are offensive.

On Rush Limbaugh and Hannity the focus not on how this related to Donald Trump or even possible impeachment but how they believe there are 2 different systems of justice in the US right now. Cohen/Mannafort being guilty to them just makes it more unbelievable that nothing was done about Hillary Clinton's email server. They acknowledged the convictions/guilty pleadings, but then turned and focused how it had nothing to do with Russia and said that Hillary Clinton and the "deep state" Justice department did much worse. Premise is Clinton's campaign paid a foreign agent (Steele) who went and used fake or unverified Russian dirt on Trump (Steele Dossier) to then get surveillance on some of Trump's people.
This theme got probably as much coverage as to the actual guilty pleadings/convictions, especially on Hannity's radio show. Mannafort's conviction is less significant to both sides of the political aisle. Hannity tried to downplay Mannafort's tax issue, noting Al Sharpton has had some tax issues, but reporting your taxes and not being able to pay them is very different than not reporting them.
In terms of the Cohen pleading guilty to a campaign finance felony that implicates the president, the conservative pundits said that doesn' t mean the president did anything illegal and that it is not a crime for a candidate to pay off someone they had an affair with with personal funds ie Jon Edwards case. They also cited Clinton pollster Mark Penn who wrote a piece defending Trump on the legality of paying off Stormy. They also cited a former head of the FEC who said the same thing.
Meanwhile, on MSNBC tons of comparisons were made to Watergate. Cohen pleading guilty to a crime involving Trump last night was presented as a slam dunk for Trump committing a crime. They noted how Trump's campaign chairman and personal lawyer are now both felons and the two Congressman who first endorsed Trump are both charged with campaign finance felonies as well (unrelated to Trump).
Comparisons to Bill Clinton were made all around but now it is the Republicans on the side of the philanderer and the Democrats on the side of not violating the law.

My take is with what we know now, now way President Trump gets removed from office unless more comes out. Impeachment and removal from office are political things. If the Dems take the House, conceivable he could get impeached but no way does he get removed from Senate. Clinton was impeached but not removed from office.
And listening to Rachel Maddow tonight I got the impression she believes the same thing. She led off with a 25 minute monologue with no commercials and she barely touched on the charges of yesterday. Her focus really was on what more could come out and her focus was on Cohen agreeing to talk to the NY Attorney General about the Trump Foundation which is accused of violating all sorts of non-profit laws and also being used to benefit the Trump campaign. She noted that with state charges Trump can't pardon anyone and the whole family could be accused of criminal activity. She (and some of the other MSNBC hosts) tried to tie in the Russian angle as well. If Trump was willing to commit a conspiracy to impact the election (paying off Daniels) then surely he could be involved with the Russians. She made some reference to I think a $50,000 payment for technical services that Cohen made for Trump. I think her implication was that this could have been to the Russians to hack the DNC. Definitely a stretch, but she noted the Steele Dossier implicated Cohen and the Russians.
I wasn't too far off as this article discusses that:
but as is noted at the end of the article and on conservative TV last night, Cohen's lawyer who is very tight with the Clinton says Cohen never was in Prague like the Steele Dossier alleged.
Despite the developments, I think everyone is still waiting to see what happens with all of this.
