Gender fluidity has been a hot button topic lately and it seems to be becoming more accepted (especially among the younger generation) that someone who was born male can become a female if he identifies as a female and vice versa. The way we are progressing it seems like identifying with a different gender than what we may have been biologically assigned upon birth will become more accepted, especially in the next 25,or so years.
One side of this new belief system that I think isn’t considered is the impact this will have upon athletics, especially women athletes (track & field in the case of this discussion). I do see a possibility of more and more males who identify as females wanting to compete as females-this seems like a logical conclusion if the state & society accepts their feelings as valid.
To cut straight to my question- Do you guys/girls/etc see this becoming an issue in our sport in the maybe not so far future? Will biologically born females have a harder time competing as biologically born men who identify as women enter female track events? Long term, will separating races by gender just become outdated as gender fluidity, if taken literally, means I can feel like a male one day and a woman the next? Any other thoughts are welcomed. I know it may sound like I am against this gender fluidity trend but I’m really just curious about other people’s feelings on this are in connection to sport.
