Not every lab rat can be the best lab rat.

^This. Shorter and Rodgers were far more successful than Rupp will ever be. We need to get back to how they trained.
Shorter was a little more successful in a weaker era. Rodgers was not really more successful.

THANK YOU. MY POINT EXACTLY.

About as well as it did for Rocky, considering they're both fictional characters and not real athletes.

I would say yes. To be the best in the world you are going to need a lot $$$ besides the obvious a really good coach. I don’t think we will go back to how we trained elite athletes 20 or 30 years ago.
I would add a level of nuance to this and say elite runners need enough $$$ to have a lot of TIME. As long as they are sponsored and dont have to worry about money, then they can train 100% of the time. Not sure what that salary figure is, but it only has to be enough so that they can go full time.
The lab rat stuff is bells and whistles that has a vague and uncertain correlation on outcome.
Forgot to mention that starting age is more of a determinant of success than any bells and whistles. Look at Haile G, Bekele, Rupp, all started at an early age and continued to train consistently for 15 - 20 years.

Look at Dickson Chumba, who started in his early 20s and ran 2:08 within three years.

While the 2 older brothers did do many sports before deciding on track, Jakob only skied for a while and then switched to running. Both the Dad & older brothers have long felt that Jakob was going to be the best, they just didn't expect it to happen so soon. Apparently their younger sister is super eager to get running, but their Dad doesn't feel he knows enough yet to train her.
Their younger sister is already running, and at 11, she won the 600m indoor title for 13-year olds this winter.
Jakob mentioned somewhere in “Team Ingebrigtsen” that she’s the most talented of the bunch.

Yeah, this is either a poor trolling attempt or a nostalgic baby boomer. Galen would stomp out Shorter and Rodgers at any distance, any day, and make it look like an easy workout.

He’s past his prime buddy he’s not setting anymore world records let alone in the marathon.
His most recently race in Bern says otherwise.
