Every video I've seen of Jakob training looks so methodical and scientific. Clearly this approach began when he was 10 years old or so.
Is the lab-rat training approach a necessary evil for success? Are the days of running by feel and grinding miles out on dirt roads over? Is distance running now another sport that requires money and resources for success?
I think so. I suspect if someone really talented like Bekele had trained this way, his WRs would be ever lasting.

He had quite a good deal of 'lab' help though. Not sure about Jakob yet.

Do you mean having great coaching with a well thought out LONG TERM approach to training and racing? Cause that will always produce the best results. The BEST!
He'll need to prove that the method did more than hurry up his progression.
Hard to say if he'll get more out of his potential.

How did that work for Ivan Drago?
If Bekele had the lab philosophy's Jakob or Rupp has he would of easily run sub 26 in 10,000m and could probably do a sub 2 hour mary. I for one can't wait for his world record in the marathon. He is a natural, and he is doing it all by himself. He coaches himself and runs a business empire at the same time. How many elites do anything useful when there not running.

His older brothers were more trial and error. I think that if you do low distance-high intensity then yes. If you do almost all running below threeshold then no
I would say yes. To be the best in the world you are going to need a lot $$$ besides the obvious a really good coach. I don’t think we will go back to how we trained elite athletes 20 or 30 years ago.

it suggests that starting very early is the key. this appears to be true of all sports. when did tiger woods start? the whole running to school principal in effect.
That's outrageous! Principals should not have to run to school!
Bekele, Kipchoge, Kwemoi, Manangoi, etc. are much more "lab grown" that Jakob could ever dream of being.
Coddled at an early age by Italian coaches and agents, pumped full of EPO. Pure science experiments. Jakob seems like a normal kid in comparison.
