I'll save my "that's bullshite!" bullets for fitness celebrities who make big claims but don't enter real competitions. Guys who actually perform in real competitions can be judged by those competitions.
He ran 30km at 3:31 minutes per km pace. That works out to 5:40 minutes per mile. This is during a triathlon. I’m sure can run faster during his shorter training runs.
Always take tri running distances with a pinch of salt when it comes to accuracy of distance, they even allow for that. Having said that, he does come across as a well credentialed honest athlete.
😂😂😂 you guys are are hilarious! I ran this, I ran that… shut the f up… people like you nowhere near the sport and comparing yourself to athletes like Sanders!!! What a giggle it is reading your comments. Thanks for the laugh!
Only thing proven after all these years is he’s an alleged user and that workout not looking real if he can only roll a 70-min half. I don’t count the bike because he’s a pro, just like I don’t count altitude for an altitude trained athlete.
Youre clearly out of touch with reality. Lionel Sanders runs 5:15s off a hard bike on a tough course and you don't think he can handle those 2 mile repeats? Sure he runs like he's been shot in the thigh, but his resume speaks for itself.
Fun observation: Both Connor Weaver (13th at the trials) and Sanders ran 1:10 at 70.3 Oceanside this weekend. Run course record is 1:07:40 by Jason West last year. Accurate course and the wind, 180s, and steep ramp section make it surprisingly difficult. Runners love slamming them, but the top level triathletes are world class athletes. Sanders is right up there.
This thread & that workout are from 5 years ago... obviously you're running faster than 70.3 pace (roughly open marathon pace) in training. "Only" running a 70min 13.1 @ the end of a 70.3 smdh.
Connor Weaver (2:13:56PB in Feb/24) should break the Ironman marathon record if (1) he does an Ironman (2) he can improve his bike a little and not come out of the bike completely broken
Not really how it works -- you spend ~75% of the race (& closer to 60% biking) swimming/biking. The top athletes in the sport really don't have weaknesses across all 3 disciplines. Idk his background. It would help if he grew up swimming. If not, it'll be very difficult to ever make a front pack. True distance runners can struggle on the bike. It helps to have a little more weight there.
He had a strong race in Oceanside but was still in the back half of the elite field. You trade in a couple minutes for the fastest run split for way more time back on the bike. The woman's winner rode 2:18-flat (& put 3 minutes on him overall). He rode 2:30. Riding to 2:20 & running 1:12 would be much more encouraging. It's hard to learn how to not save energy on the bike for the run & still be able to run well. It's more than a little bold to say that he should break the IM record. IM record doesn't really matter a ton because of course discrepancy but his focus should be on trying to get in the money/getting a KQ within the next couple of years. He's going to have a hard time doing that at the Pro Series races this season.
Oh, & there are guys out there like Patrick Lange & Matt Hanson who can run in the 2:30s at the end of an IM. Even if he outruns guys like that, they're gonna put a ton of time into him on the bike. Gotta put some respect on the ability for top athletes to run well at the end of these races, often times in garbage conditions. Those with the fastest PBs don't always get the fastest run split.

Asking purely out of ignorance, not due to any hostility towards Sanders: why are we presuming that the 1:10:40 is legit? Aren't tri courses notorious for often being inaccurately measured? Is this course different in this regard?
Have you noticed that Sanders has a strange body with very short legs compared to his torso which actually is typical of elite swimmers. I believe he can do repeat two miles in around 10 minutes or faster but not sure about the 9.34? I think I saw one video of him a few years ago running a 3000 meter time trial in around 8:50. His golf form actually looks okay.
I've watched several of his videos and he comes across as somebody on the spectrum like Asperger's or something similar - highly focused almost to a pathological level. Even the way he talks etc something seems a little bit off.
His swim was actually not so bad. Well, it's bad, but you can tell that he has swam before. He swam 27:21 and was only 42 seconds behind Joe Skipper for example.
He ran faster than both Hansen and Lange in Oceanside (obviously)
No, he will not win any 70.3/Ironman soon. But he could break the Ironman marathon record for sure. He simply needs to get to a point where he can do 230w to 250w+ for 4:XX hours without destroying his legs.
Dude has run like a 14:35 in a time trial. Not fast for an elite runner but plenty fast for the workouts being talked about especially for an endurance guy training for 4+ hour races.
He definitely has some OCD type issues but the we need to really stop saying any one who is a bit odd is on the spectrum.

Nothing wrong with being on the spectrum - many high fliers are. Kudos to Lionel Sanders. With a name like that, it's almost obligatory that he's someone of distinction. Dude's work ethic is second to none.
Nah there are probably a dozen guys aleeady in triathlon who can outrun Connor Weaver on the track/roads. Most of them focus on ITU but we are going to start seeing them spillover into the long course stuff with all the money up for grabs.
Full Ironman is a different beast and relies heavily on cycling strength. Weaver won't survive the sport long enough to find the sort of power that let's him translate his raw running ability. If he was 23 with a pile of cash, possibly. But he's a 28 year old dad who is just now getting his feet wet.
No I totally agree -- 70.3 run courses vary in the 12.7 to 13.3 mile range. Some include trail/grass. Oceanside is considered to be legit. Paved course. Weather is almost always good there so you get some of the fastest run times of the year. Times even looked a little slower compared to last year so maybe they moved a turnaround or something. Pros getting 13.2-13.25 on Strava.
