I just do it because my life is empty and I realize how much of a loser I am whenever I have free time.

Same. No wife, no kids, rarely get dates.
Between training and work I manage to consume my free time, but the money keeps rolling in and it is going to be really depressing in 20 years when I can technically retire at 50 but have nothing to retire to so I just keep working.
There are no upper middle class workaholics. By definition, the UMC don't need to work hard they inherited it or made their pile and are now living a classy lifestyle off the fat. If you see a workaholic, they may (or may not) have an UMC income, but they are not UMC. Bad form to be seen to be trying too hard.

Upper-Middle Class here. Working 40 hours a week, taking off early on Friday and golfing Saturday and relaxing Sunday with the wife is not a bad way to live. Not too mention not worrying about retirement or bills. If you make good use, travel and do the things you love when you can, life is great. It's good not being poor. Find the balance.

Actually, some do. Look up 'black companies' in Japan.

Hey jackas$, this thread is things middle class people tell themselves which aren't necessarily true.
"Made $2k in my 401k today, going to celebrate"- Goes home and watches TV
You would be surprised how many people don’t see work as work. It’s still hard day to day but they’re happy and satisfied with the process.
You still have to grind even if you’re a pro athlete and training on some beautiful mountain.
"I'm going to retire and do all the things I've always wanted to do."
Then their wife divorces them for working too hard and takes all their money.
I’m not Scrooge McNugget.

These are great! A real air of authenticity to them
keep 'em coming
This question is fraught with false premises.
First, the question presumes that one needs to be a workaholic in order to be wealthy (upper-middle class). I, for one, am wealthy and work only 40 hours per week, and i earned all my money.
Second, it presumes that workaholics or the highly career oriented are unhappy (i.e.: they need to convince themselves to not feel so empty). That's pretty much straight-up bullsh!t stereotypical garbage.

Let the poors think what they want about you. It helps them feel better.
