Yea unfortunately your views are what makes the sport of distance running so hard. It is one of the few sports that you can show up to on a weekend and be in a race with Olympians.
Trying to make any money in sport is difficult without sponsorship or prize money or both.
As a sailor how often do you get to go in a regatta against Olympians or anyone remotely at the top of their sport?
Are you trying to say that Galen Rupp is going to start showing up at my local 5K if they offer $500?
1) I bet that if there was a 5k near where Galen Rupp lives that was offering $500, he'd jog it for some extra cash
2) I'm not saying that elites would show up, but I bet that local 14:45 guys would

Silly humblebrag.
We are not giving you any prize money.
Tome bonuses? OK. But only sub 14/29
I can point at a few hundred bicycle racing series' nationwide that pay cash. It's pretty nice to race for nothing all year, given transport, bike parts/maintenance, food, but it can be done. You can even come out ahead if you're really good.
Running road races at those crazy high fees just to get a T-shirt or whatever is ridiculous.
A lot of the race budget now gets sucked up by the police. Many PDs across the US have not received decent raises in over a decade because of budget problems in municipal governments. PDs make up for that by requiring special events to use lots of police officers, pay them overtime and 4 hour minimums. That cost really eats into the budget of a small race that just wants to get some fast local guys a chance to race for some cash. Also, the mass participation thing and East African onslaught has drained the value of elite runners.

How is it that races are getting thousands of entrants and charging $30-$50 per entry and can't find $1,000 to dole out in prize money? Well a couple races in my area do and they are the ones that the local fast guys show up for. Every race should be like this. Hire 1 less rent-a-cop and you make up the difference. There would be an incentive to be in top 5k/10k shape year-round.
By the way, I'm talking about $500/$250 overall, not per gender.
1) The number of cops "rented" is often an issue when the parade permit is issued by the city.
2) Good luck with not offering prize money for men and for women.
3) Feel free to start a race with prize money.
4) You assume all race directors care about having a competitive race.

No shirts, no post race party, no prizes for age group winners. Winners (m and f) get 150-200 dollars. Everyone else gets a recorded time on a measured course. Five dollar entry fee.
When and where are you holding this race?

Bike racing has had that culture for a long long time. Running has not.

I would take a different take on the police issue in that for a long time the parade permit (that is often what a race falls under) was really cheap and the PD was paying the officers so essentially the government was underwriting a chunk of the cost. When city budgets got tight, the full cost was passed along to permit holders.
Here are some reports on the costs...

There you go. Race directors looking to raise a little money for a charity typically don't care if the winning time is 13:30 or 19:30.

I agree but would also offer same for females.
Why? Aren't they racing in the same race?
I can’t imagine why women aren’t more into you.
Aren't participation medals good enough?
Aren't t-shirts with advertisements of sponsors enough?
Isn't it enough just to enjoy being alive and running with a crowd of slow and unfit hobby joggers?
Let us not reward excellence by offering monetary compensation, but let's celebrate our collective diversity and mediocrity!!!
Also, inflexible women should consider hot yoga to get loose, and then go on a date with Jamin.

I ran in an LBGT pride 5K that offered prizes only to top 3 overall regardless of gender or sex
Prizes were bottles of champagne

Why?
If you had a daughter you'd know why. But since you can't even get a girlfriend, the daughter ain't gonna happen.
More road races should go American only with their prize money.

Indeed. My first race of the year had a 12,500 purse 25 deep for a ~90 minute race. The women's field had the same for 60 minutes, and only had about 30 women in the race. Nearly everyone got paid out.
I routinely do 75-90 minute crits that have $5000 purses. Even local races will have $1000 purses 10 deep. I made 2k in prize money last year, and have already made 1k this year with just 2 months of racing.
Got $450 bucks last year from a 7th place and a $200 prime in a 60 minute race.
Bike racing is easy to make money if you don't totally, but it also has the whole equipment cost issue and to really get money you have to travel pretty far (8-10 hours) at times.

How many people care that a couple of guys battled to a 16:30 finish in a 5K? How does that benefit the people who put on races? Why should they dole out $1000 for something that's of absolutely no value to them?
