I think Shoebacca nailed it. My mom (87) won't use a computer, IPAD or other newer technology, but she is vibrant and sociable and I believe that makes the difference between being functional or not in old age. I myself at 67 am a little behind on accepting changes just out of laziness. But being aware of it makes the possibility of adjusting much more likely. The OP's dad will have to become more self aware and make the effort himself to expand his participation in life or be confined to a deteriorating existence.

Could be Dementia with Lewy Bodies. One of the hardest phases for family to deal with is the early phase - firm diagnosis hasn't been made so sufferer is deemed to be just a pain in the ass.
