OP Stumpy come back and tell us how you are. Did you get diagnosed? Fixed? Props to the product promotion bots for reviving a thread.
You'd better go to the doctor to determine the treatment plan as soon as possible. The fat tissue behind my knee was severely affected, causing inflammation of all surrounding tissues. So I chose to perform the surgery as soon as possible, and then I continued to perform physical therapy, including cryotherapy, according to the doctor's advice. This has helped me a lot in my recovery.

I've had what I thought is runner's knee for about 2 months. It is constant pain on the lower inner right knee. I feel it when I walk down steps. I took an ENTIRE month off and it is the same (which I've never done). I'm icing and stretching and rolling and there is no improvement. I can run with it but I am afraid I am causing more damage. I'm a 44 year old master runner.
You need to get an MRI done, which would probably require a referral from your primary care doctor. I recently had a knee injury from a car cutting in front of me and having to stop abruptly, which caused a meniscus tear and bone bruising in my knee. They were not sure if there was a fracture with part of the bone 'floating' around in knee, but an orthopedic surgeon read the MRI results with me and said it was just a bone bruise. But I am very grateful I went in and got the MRI and didn't just keep running - if I would have it would have only got worse and caused some real damage. I had to take off 2 months from running, and have recently started cross training with swimming and biking. The orthopedic surgeon gave me a plan to start running again, very much easing back into it.
