I'd like to settle the Sage debate once and for all. I follow Sage, have purchased one of his plans, and generally think that he appears to be a decent guy. So, I am not a "hater" of him. With that said . . .
I believe the problem that people have with him is that he is considered a "professional" runner. When you are considered a professional athlete, the bar is set extremely high. Yet, his times do not appear to be worthy of this status. Take the NBA for comparison sake. If Sage was a basketball player, he would likely not even be at the level of the D-League. Players in the D-League I would compare to those who hit the OTQ for the marathon. In other words, they at least have a foot in the door, even if they are not near the top.
So, maybe the branding of Sage is the problem. In other words, if I started posted and making videos about my attempt to break, say, 3:00 in the marathon, there would likely not be such hate, as people could see it for what it is. But the label of being a professional and the "look at me" millennial attitude, I think is what makes him so divisive. However, that is not necessarily Sage's fault and his marketing and self-promotion allows him to lead (what appears to be) an exciting and adventurous lifestyle. As they say, "don't hate the player, hate the game."
Now, I'm off to go see if there are any recently vlogs I have missed on his youtube channel . . . . .
