I have some friends who have run their PBs in Copenhagen. The course is fast. However, I am not sure how competitive the pack is. Races like Hamburg (yesterday) have much more sub 2:20 runners.
Hopefully everything goes well and you'll run a sub 2:19 marathon this time.
Last year only 3 went sub 2:19 and 4 sub 2:20.

I'm supposed to get excited about an aslo-ran for the OTQ. Even if he qualifies (which he won't) I can't cheer for him in the OTs.
He couldn't face the competition so went the ultra route that slow white guys usually go.
That's like saying Bernoulli went into Physics because he couldn't face the competition in Malamute mushing.

So kids who couldn’t get a scholarship to run D1 should quit and not bother running at a D2 or D3 school? That’s your point?
Sage is a good runner. He speaks honestly here, in a hostile environment, about his choices. He has been honest about recognizing his abilities and that he made decisions to make the most of running given his abilities. He also happens to really enjoy running in the mountains. You coming on here and trying to belittle him when he’s already been honest about his abilities? It just makes you look like a small shitty person who likely is a much shittier runner.
The guy is going to try and essentially time trial a sub 2:19 marathon. If that doesn’t impress you please post links to your strava or marathon results that make the 2:19 time trial seem lame compared to your credentials. He’s slow compared to you, right?
Sage was trying to make a point that he was a top 50-75 Marathoner in the US. Based on Boston, I have him ranked just outside of the top 20,000 in the US. 19,950 Americans finished that race and he didn't even know how to run until the finish cause he's weak. Top 50?!?! Come on, man! He's still trying to live off the glory of Houston where he couldn't even podium if they only allowed Americans on the podium!
Unless he takes up meat he won’t hit the standard. Vegan is a bad idea for BIG performances! Chicken pasta all the way!
I went down to Copenhagen for that race 5 or 6 years ago, and it was a great race. However, there was a section along the water that ran on cobblestones for around a km and that was annoying. They might have changed that. It was pretty balmy (maybe 20 degrees). With the HM acclaim of late, I imagine more elites will be making their way to Copenhagen this year and subsequent years. Lovely race in a great city. Sage seems like a hipster, so he will enjoy his trip either way.

Some of the above comments are pretty weak. I was upset as a competitor to see him pull out of Boston, but then again, running races isn't my career, so I was mindful of that as well. Still love seeing athletes gut through tough conditions though. I hope he gets his qualifier. He's a great ambassador for the sport and will continue to inspire many.
Runners like Sage are good for the sport, and I wish him well. He's an authentic dude in a world where authenticity is hard to come by. Not sure Copenhagen is the perfect race for his OTQ, but it seems like he's in really good shape right now, so I think it's a possibility.

You may want to do some research into "hipsters". Sage doesn't exactly fit the bill.
I would have picked something domestic. The travel and time change are both going to be negative factors here.

sage is an asset to the broader running community as a whole and I wish him the best of luck.

Maybe you aren't retarded and shouldn't be killed. And how you rank people is your own business. But ranking a guy who finished Boston in 5:05 ahead of a 2:20 or better guy because the latter dropped out of Boston is beyond silly and invites that sort of response. On the other hand, if I'm the 5:05 guy I probably love you. Heck, I rank ahead of Rupp right now.
I don't have a big problem with Sage in general, but the fact that he is a 2:16 guy who should be at his peak and yet is scrabbling around for a sub-2:19 does not speak well to his coaching ability. He seems to have very poor instincts and strategy with regard to this distance.

you seem to think that we as fans aren't allowed to criticize runners because we aren't as fast. That's bunk.
Line one: you say imply that he had the ability to compete but chose not to.
Line two: you say that he "can't compete"
I'm guessing line two was not meant to change your view point but that you misspoke and that you do believe that Sage had the talent and ability to compete on the road? That's interesting, you should elaborate on that. What distances do you think he was capable of competing at and being able to podium at? What times do you think he would have been able to achieve?
I've certainly not seen anything from him that leads me to believe that he could have been competitive on the roads. His choice to move to trails seems wise, a man who knew his limits. But, I'd love to hear your views on why you think he had so much more talent than his past times seemed to indicate.
