Why should low mileage with lots of high speed be more impossible than the high mileage regiment advocated by most people on LRC?
the whole truth in a question. there is no need to list all the world class runners who are successful with moderate or even low mileage, but all quality. the middle distance coaching of frank horwill comes to my mind when i look at the training of el g. i would not say that it is the optimal plan but obviously it worked for many.
for a race of less than four minutes duration it seems questionable wether regular slow paced runs make a specific contribution. the runs listed above of 30, 45 or 60 minutes at marathon pace (i.e. 6-12 miles for el g) are a great aerobic stimulus, it is nothing else than a tempo run and no waste of time because the duration is more than enough for a middle distance runner.
