Surging only works if you get someone else to change their race strategy and go with you. Look at the race and the splits. No one else changed strategies because of the surges.

The one guy called him Yuki Karaoke.
I find it extremely disrespectful that they had no idea who Yuki Kawauchi was, and for that matter had basically no idea of anybody minus the couple favorites were. But being a fan of running has always been a disappointment, and I expect nothing better in the future. Too bad David Torrence is no longer with us, his commentary during the last US olympic trials was probably the best Ive ever heard in running.
NBC is a terrible mass propaganda machine in cahoots with CNN, Fox, BBC etc. Just awful. I mean, I guess the coverage was on par with their news and political coverage, aimed at dumbing down the masses into a bunch of sheep.
We must try and get this thread forwarded to Larry's NBC email, or some contact in NBC. He needs to read this, and hopefully formally apologize to Yuri? Yumi? Yui? Ah sh*t, I can't remember. Let's just use Karaoke and hope no one notices.
On a side note, can anyone imagine how awesome it would have been to see Callum Hawkins in that race dueling it out with Karaoke? The only other runner I can imagine being as hard as Yuki in those conditions.
I would be awesome if the Super Bowl has announcers like this. Brady throws an 85-yard TD and Rawson is laughing that he's "long left the game."
The score is 49-3 with 37 seconds left, and Rawson is talking about the awesome move the 3-point team made 25 minutes ago, how they're untouchable. The players are walking PROUD as they get ready for a kick-off.
It is Ka-wa-oo-chi (ka wa u chi) and not Ka-wow-chi. I took a few years of Japanese and know the katakana and hiragana (and some of the kanji).
Think of NBCs competition - I seem to recall ESPN cutting away from Shalanes move last year in NYC to do an indepth about Kevin Harts fucking heart monitor

You must have missed when Yuki surged up Heartbreak Hill and dropped Rupp, among others. Rupp then changed his race strategy and dropped out.
No bigee. Outside of Boston area, NBC tucked the TV coverage far down to one of the minor NBC specialty channels that few watch.
It's perfectly okay to disrespect and belittle Asians. You didn't know that? Get with the times, bro.

It was obvious Rupp was having a bad day long before that. Yuki's surge had nothing to do with it.
Yea, because he wore them out and left them all in the dust!
NONE of what you said has any relevance. Masback ran a 3:52 mile but that has nothing to do with his ability to call a race. Who cares.
Agreed. Rawson was a 4:07 miler in college, and it has done absolutely nothing for his ability to call marathons properly. Which is not to say that experience is everything. It comes down to doing good research and making the effort to do a thorough job. Someone like Al Trautwig doesn't know what he doesn't know, so it's hard for him to do a good job even if he does the work. That's why he's doing color and human interest angles, asking man-on-the-street questions, etc. Larry is supposed to know technical points, inside baseball kind of things. He could, but he's been relying on the same hackneyed cliches and tropes he started with forty plus years ago. I'm glad it finally so obviously bit him in the ass.
Of course, absolutely nothing changes because nobody cares.
"You must have missed when Yuki surged up Heartbreak Hill and dropped Rupp, among others. Rupp then changed his race strategy and dropped out." LOL
Typical half ass coverage of road racing and / or track and field in the USA. Surprised NBC didn't bring Carol Lewis out. Tim Hutchings is far and away the best. And he's from the UK!! He knows more about US running than the locals, let alone his superb expertise on the global scene. Show's where running ranks in the USA as spectator friendly viewing. No way the NFL, NBA , MLB or NHL sends out just anyone to commentate on their events. Hell, motorsports here have far more qualified announcers, and there's really not much to describe when cars are doing the work.
Rawson is horrible. Do a little homework next time. At the very least get the names right. There is a resource known as the internet these days.
In watching the local WBZ broadcast, I was surprised that even Tony Reavis would mispronounce Kawauchi's name, although having Kirui in there probably messed everyone up.
It was a horrible race strategy that gave the illusion of working if you were an idiot.
