Is it because sprinting is cool so it isn't a waste of time, but long distance dorks feel the need to justify all the wasted hours ?

Spot on.
Yeah, like telling coworkers I ran 100m is going to impress them. (insert roll eyes emoticon here)

Neither does telling them you did a marathon..
Difference is sprinters aren't feeble
Sprintgeezer is a hobbysprinter. The problem they have is that races are few and far between.
Hobby Sprinter=Crossfitter
Hobby sprinters absolutely exist. They're the types that wear rogue t-shirts, frequent bodybuilding.com, pride themselves on squatting ass-to-grass, enjoy the imbecilic rants of Mark Rippetoe, and decry any aerobic exercise as muscle-wasting, bro. I see them on the track doing 100s with awful form while I'm doing my starts and 60s. My only complaint about them is their poor track etiquette (don't take up the lanes when you're slow or not using them, bro).
I call these guys Jason Blahas

Training for distance running is simpler than sprint training. If I'm a couch potato and I decide that I want to run a 5K this summer, I just get a pair of running shoes and I start jogging. I can start out by running around the block a few times per week, then increase my distance and frequency as I'm able. At this stage, the training is all pretty intuitive.
Sprint training is more technical and less intuitive. That guy who was willing to start running around the block a few times per week probably isn't going to figure out how to fit plyos, lifting, and various types of track workouts together into a coherent 100m training plan.
That's a really good explanation. I was mostly trolling before but this makes a lot of sense.
False premise. Lots of football players who participate in track are Hobby Sprinters. We actually had one who won the 100m at conference then yelled out "I do this as a hobby."
I have raced everything from 100-50K, but find 4/800 the most fun and healthful. I have coached some post-collegiate who can compete with the current collegiate, running unattached or with a club, and a few masters national champions.
Races are harder to come by, but all-comers meets, time trials and masters meets provide incentive. I currently have a couple of guys in their 40s who are competing 200-800 in college meets and will run an occasional 100 or 1500. We do group runs up to ten miles and lots of short hills, drill, strides, track sessions, etc.. For most people, doing this without a coach would be a bit risky and unprofitable, I think.
Sprinters are born, not made. Sure, once somebody realizes they're "the fastest kid in school", there are technical things they can work on, but even perfecting the technical things won't take someone from a 13-14s 100m to a sub-10.
So most people think it is a pointless hobby to sprint. It's not, but that is a different topic.
Why do you care? Just "do you" slim. Quit worrying about everybody else's bizness.
There is room for an unlimited (within reason) number of runners on the roads. On a 100-nmeter track straightaway, not so much.
Sprints are all I "train" to do. The most I will ever jog as a warm up or cool down is maybe 2 miles, otherwise I just do track workouts, mostly just sprints. I don't talk about it at work because why would I? I'm also a white guy with a very large penis, which I also don't talk about at work. I've always thought large penises are a sprinters thing. Long distance is for the little guys.
^this.
I’m not a hobby sprinter, I’m an old has-been/never-was sprinter.
The difference is that my body can handle it (sort of) because it has been conditioned to do so, and I have enough natural ability that I don’t get injured otherwise. Yes I still get injured from going too hard too soon, because the season is too short here.
Sprinting is not running. Sprinting is an explosive power exercise, which equals injury for most people. There are also no hobby gymnasts or olympic lifters, for the same reason.
Again, runners are not sprinting at the end of a race, they are just running faster.
I am, however, a hobbyjogger! Since we just got nearly 2’ of snow here, I did a treadmill workout that I was pretty proud of—5k @ 2% grade in 19:30, with only a casual aerobic base, at 180 lbs and almost 52 yrs old.
Anybody who would be proud of that kind of workout is for sure a hobbyjogger (at best).
BTW I finally figured out how to run on a mill. I used to be lazy and just let the tread carry my feet rearwards, but my body didn’t like that—so now I am actively sweeping my foot rearwards before footplant, rather than just sort of stabbing at the tread.
Never too old to figure things out. Yeah, I know: “moran”.
But just a hobby-moran.
Sprinters have enough self confidence not to get triggered by hobby sprinters trying to run fast. Sprinters know they're fast and don't need to post on LetsSprint about their 10.X 100m, hot wife/gf, etc to feel validated.
Letsrun is a sanctuary city and safe zone for some of the most triggered, scrawny, socially inept, and overlooked snowflakes who happen to run.
me and another old dude can be found doing track intervals at the local HS track on the weekend
He wears spikes and does like 200m all out repeats on 5 minutes or so rest, pretty awesome for his AG, I think he comes in under 30s a bit
me I'm just doing my 8*400 workout on 60s rest at around 1:26/1:27 lol and it's hard to tell that I'm nailing it
I asked him the other day what he's training for and he told me 'nothing in particular', although he used to be a 800 guy [I didnt ask for his PR], I guess he's gone down in distance as he got older or 800 guys do 200 repeats in spikes or I have no idea
Female coach having affair with male runner. Should I report it?
Colin Sahlman runs 1:45 and Nico Young runs 1:47 in the 800m tonight at the Desert Heat Classic
If Daniel's and Pfitz are outdated..then where do I look for modern training plans?
