You salty bro? Anyone who qualifies for the Olympic Trials or is close is certainly someone I can learn from and enjoy following. Yes, Sage is a self-promoter but if he wasn't he might not be in the sport because there isn't exactly a ton of money. A top-100 golfer can make a living but a top-100 runner cannot.
BTW, in 2016, when the half standard was 1:05, 86 qualified on the men's side with a marathon and 125 with a half. Hitting the OTQ marathon standard is more like being in the top-100 IMO. There's something to be said for being in the top 1/10 of 1% of marathoning or whatever it would be.
I wasn't trying to suggest it was lame for him to try, or that he himself shouldn't be proud of it if he accomplishes it. I was trying to suggest that it is a sub-elite time, so I'm not sure why we would discuss his odds of accomplishing it. I tend to only care about news of elite runners or news of runners I know personally.
I would also argue against your contention that anybody who makes top 100 in the country is somebody you can learn from. I have met athletes who have competed to the point of reaching the trials in the other events (so top 24) who had very poor training plans, but just had amazing talent. Those individuals you wouldn't want to try to learn from. The majority of course have good plans and wisdom to share about the sport, but there are always those handful that don't. So when you/'re looking at somebody on the cusp of a OTQ marathon time, there are certainly some you wouldn't want to try to learn from.
