Good god. Your situation is dire.
- Cut all your expenses and start paying off your credit card debt. Just paying the minimum is like a 30 year mortgage at 18%+.
- Don't cancel your cards but cut them up except for 1 between the two of you. Cancelling will effect your credit score (I'm sure this is in the dumps already).
- If you can do a transfer to a card with no interest for a year then do so. Keep doing this every year. (not sure that even exists any more)
- Cut all extraneous expenses. No $5 coffee. No organic food. No expensive races. No vacations. No going out to eat. No going to bars.
- Some time shares are almost impossible to get out of. They're horrible to get roped in to. If you can get out of yours without paying exorbitant fees, then do so.
- Your cell phone bill is outrageous. Call your service provider and get your plan reduced to the cheapest one possible. Never go over your data usage. Better yet, if you don't have a contract, get pre-paid burner phones instead for emergencies. Yes, you are this poor.
- Is $459 for two cars? If not, you have way too much car for your income. If it's for two cars, sell the more expensive car immediately.
- What's a private loan? Your parents?
- "she is eligible for public forgiveness" does this mean as two working adults, you're going to default on your student loans?
- "we’re pretty much spending all our disposable income..." Um, you have no disposable income!!! You have $40k in CC debt. All your extra income should go towards paying this off.
- Absolutely no new purchases. Sell off anything you have of value and put it towards this CC debt. Seriously, go around your apartment right now and start putting stuff on ebay and craigslist. No joke, start taking pictures and post stuff on craigslist.
- See if you can get a raise and/or get a second job on the weekend to get your income up.
- What's your plan for when the forbearance on your student loan runs out and you need to make those payments plus the additional debt you've accrued in the meantime. Remember, you're still adding to your debt everyday.
- You're obviously not including everything in your expenses or else you wouldn't have $40K in CC debt. Stop lying to yourselves about your situation.
- Pay the minimum on your wife's student loans or defer them till you get your CC debt paid off.
- What happens if one of you gets sick and can't work. What if one of you loses their job? You should have a 3-6 month emergency fund in case one of you is no longer working.
- If your company doesn't offer a 401k with a match then don't bother. Open a Roth IRA, but ONLY after you've paid off your CC debt.
Do you ever want to own a home? Do you ever want kids? You can't. The number one reason marriages end in divorce is due to stresses from money issues. If you love your wife, you'll take care of these things.
