OP- not looking to bash but what is your post collegiate plan? Say you ran 15:07 for 5k when you graduated and you really want to break 15:00. Where are you going to go do that now that you're graduated?
All of the meets near me are put on by D3 schools/community colleges. They're big, open meets and nobody gets bumped. You have college kids, 20/30 year olds, and masters, all going at it. There are some invitational meets that have time standards and sometimes there are multiple heats. If the 14:30 5k guy is in heat 1 and you're in heat 2 with a 15:47 I don't quite see the problem. Both athletes are going to be surrounded by people of a similar skill level. And I get that the fastest people in another heat might have gotten bumped by someone who isn't a college kid. I've been bumped before but I've also been the slowest person in my heat and finished DFL, running off the back with nobody. That isn't fun either.
