He’s probably right
I have been doing crunches for years now. I don't know if it helps my running but it makes me feel good. About all full body workouts in addition to running: I have been doing them on a consistent level for more than 50 years. My body is trim and well defined for my age. I had the good fortune to having known Arthur Lydiard during the mid 1980s. I went to a running camp three summers in a row in which he was the featured guest. In his opinion all stretching and upper body work was unnecessary. He felt that runners had to look like "plucked chickens" on top. He believed that running hills would build one's lower body. Arms were just for balance as far as he was concerned ( of course I'm talking about running). None of the runners who he coached did any such exercise. My point to him was that he didn't realize how weak many American kids were. Unlike those who he coached in New Zealand and in other places too many did any physical work at all. Hence they needed to develop strength. When Mo came to Oregon (he was already world class) none of the other runners could believe how weak he was when he first when in the weight room. He did do serious weight training there and improved his racing tremendously. Despite that as a coach I have always emphasized building more body strength. But Lydiard was right in that the most important thing for a runner to do was run and that time should never be taken away from running to do ancillary work.

Both are useless. You will never need to do either in a race.
This ^^^
There might have been other reasons for Mo's improvement under Alberto, wink wink. Not so sure it was the weights.

Crunches are almost useless. You are only working the very top of the abs.
The abs most used in running are the lower abs going right down to the genitals.
