In a word: Yes.
John McDonnell was the master at this. Ask Hood, Bruton, etc. Everyone is a 10k runner until December.
I followed Mike Smith when he was at GT and was impressed by his ability to build runners. I think by the end of his tenure, he could be the GOAT in regards to coaching.
