Hey, hope everyone had a great Christmas!
Just to comment on running the easy days too fast, I think overall, the paces have been fine. I know there have been some days that I probably could’ve held back 5-10 secs/mile, which probably shows on some of the workouts the next day, but I’ve been able to mostly hit the paces in the workouts after easy days. If you look at when I began to post the paces for the runs, I mainly stay in the 7:0x’s-7:teens, which I usually feel recovered the next day. I’ve rarely dip under 7:00/mile for a run during the week, unless it’s a fartlek/tempo. When I began this thread, I was coming off of 2.5 months of no running and had about 11 weeks of running 7:20’s-7:teens on easy days and eventually progressed to the paces I’m running now. I ran sub 15 5K with decent intensity on workouts, 60-65mpw, and runs in the 7:20’s-7:30’s earlier this year, so I figured with continued progression and different race build-up, 7:0x’s-7:teens would be typical. There was great weather (50 degrees) 2 weeks ago, which is why the runs during the week were a bit faster than normal.
Here is how last week went:
12/18-12/24:
M: 11 miles @ 7:13 pace
T: 2-mile warm-up, 4x2-mile @ HM pace w/2mins rest, 2-mile cool down. Splits: 10:40 (5:19.x,5:20.x), 10:40 (5:20.x, 5:20.x), extended break of 3:30 due to nature calling, 10:43 (5:21.x, 5:22.x), 10:40 (5:20.x, 5:19.x). Best long-interval workout to date. I did have to concentrate the last 1.5 miles of the last interval to hold the pace comfortably, but overall, happy with the workout. Total: 12 miles
W: 11 miles @ 7:13 pace
Th: Fartlek: 3 miles easy, 5x1min on/1min off, floating mile, 5x1min/on/1min off, 2.65 miles easy. Splits: 5:11, 6:39, 5:09, 6:33, 4:58, 6:50, 5:09, 6:44, 4:58, 6:03 floating mile, 4:58, 7:05, 4:48, 6:42, 5:01, 6:38, 4:50, 6:39, 5:04, 6:39. The 2.65 miles easy were @ 6:43 pace. Total: 10 miles @ 6:28 pace
F: 8 miles @ 7:19 pace
Sa: 16 miles @ 6:15 pace. I tried to make it “fast” from the beginning like I did on 11/11. I figured it would be good to see if there was improvement in the pace while running 1 more mile than last time. This is probably going to be the last hard long run I do before the HM.
Su: 8 miles @ 7:11 pace (I probably should’ve held back the pace a bit more here)
Weekly total: 76 miles
12/25-12/31:
M: took Christmas off; 0 miles
T: *attempted to do 2-mile warm-up, 3 miles @ 5:20 w/3mins rest, 2 miles @ 5:20 w/ 2mins rest, 1 mile @ 5:20, 2-mile cool down. I got to 2 miles of the 3 miles in 10:45 (5:20, 5:25) and decided to modify the workout because I was laboring to hit pace. I switched the rest of the workout to 4xmile @ 5:20 w/1:15 rest. Splits: 5:20, 5:26, 5:16, 5:30. Rough day yesterday and my pacing was all over the place. The 5:26 and 5:30 were against the wind, 5:20 and 5:16 were with the wind, but even then, I wasn’t feeling it. I’ll be running extra easy today. Total: 10 miles
W: 11 miles @ 7:teens-7:20s
Th: ? still not sure yet. Total: 10 miles
F: 8 miles easy
Sa: 15 miles easy
Su: 8 miles easy
Weekly total: 61 miles
Any thoughts? Less than 3 weeks before the half so I’m not trying to overdo it from here on out.
