I saw in a youtube clip about kenyan elite runners one of the athletes saying that his workout today was a full marathon in something like 2:30 (if I'm not mistaken). How common is that- running a slower full marathon as a workout for a marathon?

For runners that can run a slow marathon in 2.5 hours, it probably is common.
It is like if an avg runner did a long tempo 10 miler, or a 5K threshold run to prep for those distances. I don't do it for a marathon because I don't want to do a 4 hour training run.
