The same thing happen to me when I was in HS, but for a different reason. I was the 3rd guy on our varsity but I got really sick one week with the flu. I came back the next week and my coach told me to go to the JV meet and skip the varsity one.
I smoked everyone in the JV meet even after coming off a week of being sick and no training, so you should be able to do the same. It was a huge morale boost for me and motivated me to work my ass off to get my varsity spot back.
Bad races happen and it can cause a setback, but just keep putting in the mileage and effort. Good things happen to those who work for it and are able to see the bigger picture.
Same happened to me when I was a SO. I got sick right before Stanford, and my coach threw me on JV at the next dual meet, and since I was the highest finisher with a faster time than the Varsity 7th, I got my spot back. I think i finished the year 5/6 for my team. My coach had a policy that if you won a JV dual meet, or finished top 10 in JV invitationals then you automatically took out the 7th spot. I still love this idea--our 6th through 10th in high school were excellent and very competitive for this reason.
OP: when you get to that 2nd mile, start working harder than you ever have before and make good choices during that final stretch of the race. You'll be successful.
