How can that possibly be? There surely must be some kind of miscalculation here.

We like to think modern medicine is "advanced," but compared to how fast other areas of technology are advancing, it's really in the stone ages as a result of how stringently government controls everything from how doctors are trained to what medicines people are allowed to access. If the government controlled computer technology as ruthlessly and tyrannically as it does medicine, we wouldn't even have the Apple 1 yet. So thanks to the leftist notion of omniscient, omnipresent, paternal government, our kids are dying from things that should have been curable 50 years ago.
Surely these numbers have something wrong with them. Are they accounting for immigration?
It's hard for me to comprehend that the same percent of our current crop of 4th graders have passed away as those graduating H.S.in 1983. With things like diabetes, suicide, cancer, etc., ravaging the middle-aged crowd, what could possibly be killing these children at such an accelerated rate? Something is killing off the 10-year-olds five times faster than the 50 year-olds.
There are tons of anomalies in that data. For instance, 1946. Recent years show no logic. That means the population #'s are inaccurate--probably a matter of being estimated between censuses.

I agree. There's no way that can be right.

It's possible 1946 is low due to the Vietnam War.

Suicide
Regardless of the rest of the discussion, this is straight-up gold.

granted, it's an infinite competition but this is easily one of THEE stupidest posts in an aggressively stupid forum.
see you in Mexico when you croak-- without procreating, I hope00 Mr. "Free Market"? 99.999% change you're a man, ask me how I know Trumptard.
Yes because computers and medicine are totally the same thing. Because when you think about innovations in medicine, they continually increased exponentially with a likeness to Moore's law before the government ever intervened. Or somehow in 1967 while we weren't close to having the modern technology we have now with, coincidentally, computers, we would have made astonishing breakthroughs to cure what? Cancer? Diabetes? Somehow you managed the ignore the massive costs of pharmaceuticals which are supposedly for R&D for these companies so that they can make breakthroughs and as if training the doctors who deal with patients changes what scientists do in a laboratory. With those massive costs and the design of our healthcare system, you somehow think that these are leftist notions even though Obamacare is a right wing plan and unregulated pharmaceuticals are right wing. And yes, when the government gives grants to scientists as well as privately raised donations for different research groups, the government is really trying to limit expansion of medicine. Also that's not a leftist notion, that's yours.

they're just taking the # of people of a given age in the country and dividing that by the number of births from that year. so doesn't account for immigration or people who are alive who they have birth records for but didn't show up in the census for whatever reason

Please get back to us comparing the number of people who got sick or died, or had serious side effects. or even mild side effects, from using a computer. I'll start with carpal tunnel and eye strain, you take it from there.

One downside is that if I had small children, I'd be rather freaked out to think they have the same chance of dying in a few years as someone's had with 40 more years of potential exposure to life's dangers.
Hey, USA needs freedom: you need more sleep. you are delusional.

Maybe, but the statistics in this article show a trend of worsening percentages after around 2001 for some reason.
Correct...
Except the last sentence, extreme capitalism has meant that the government can make money off of medicine so of course they won't cure diseases.
