Glutes are the strongest muscles, I've believed a long time that trying to avoid the forward lean isn't often beneficial. Marius Bakken had a strong forward lean as well.
I agree with this sentiment as well. Only recently have I noticed the drawbacks
of running with an erect form as a distance runner.
The forward lean, or rather slight degree adjustment of the whole body, allows for you to make proper contact with the ground while exerting less energy.
I assume this has much to do with the relationship between the quadriceps and hamstrings and their roles in sprints and distance.
A slightly more erect form( similar to Asbel Kiprop ) seems more efficient in shorter distances but no lean at all can be a detriment at any distance. Period.
