My daughter is in seventh grade and runs cross country for her school. She does very well. She finished third out of about 300 in her 2-mile first race - 13:30 on a tough course. She also plays competitive select soccer at a very high level and practices three nights per week with 1-2 games per week.
She decided in May to join the team this fall, but I told the coach about the soccer commitment and how I didn't want to wear her out too much. He assured me that he would adjust as necessary, including allowing her to use Mondays as a recovery day since most of her soccer games are on the weekend.
She had three soccer games this weekend and rarely got a break. I thought today (Monday) would be a recovery day at cross country. Instead, she had to run 7 miles! When should I say something to the coach? Is this normal mileage for kids that age? The team practices Monday through Friday. The top-tier kids usually run 4-5 miles on a typical day and 7-8 miles on a "push" day (usually twice per week). Fridays are a light day, only 2 miles. With meets factored in, I'd say they are running close to 30 miles per week. Is that too much?
