I drove a very, very long way to see the total eclipse. Wasn't sure what to expect, but it was 100% absolutely worth it.
It was easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen in my life. It doesn't seem like it would be that dramatic just thinking about it; the moon goes in front of the sun, it gets dark... yeah ok whatever. But it turned out to be incredible. It way exceeded my expectations.
Once there was just a bit of a crescent left you began to notice weird things. It started getting dim, but it wasn't anything like how it looks when a cloud passes overhead. Kind of an eerie dimness. It then started to get pretty cold, the temperature probably dropped about 15 degrees where I was watching. Once the moon is completely covering and you can take off your filter glasses, the scene is unbelievable. The corona around the sun is brilliant white, the whole sky looks bizarre, and it looks like a sunset along the horizon in every direction. And then for a brief moment you see the edge begin to brighten and in less than second it is unbearably bright again. Gives you a real appreciation for the sheer power of the sun.
If you ever get the chance to see a total eclipse in the future you should go! Even a 99% eclipse seems like just a mild curiosity in comparison.
So yeah, it was pretty neat. Pictures just don't do it justice.
