Some of the non-collegiate runners would obviously have been better off in the "College" section. Is there a rule that prevents them from entering that race?

Remember, Webb was 11th (?) in cross NCAAs his freshman year in college. The guy's talent ranges far beyond the mile. But damn, I would never have guessed he could run 13:30, what a stud.
A 13:30 is pretty impressive this time of year. But what does this mean for the 1500? When will he make that middle distance debut?
I think it's pretty surprising he ran 27 for the last 200. He was out in the third lane (lane 7 technically) passing tons of people for the last two laps.
This is great running
He's just equaled Steve Scott's PB for 5km (both track and roads) for exactly the same part of the season that both milers would run their early season 5ks
Hopefully he can equal a couple of Steve's other PBs

Well, last year, he ran 7:59i and 13:46 and went on to run 3:32.xx. Hes run 7:47i and 13:30 this year...I would guess he'll run 3:30. Not to overanalyze, but he is probably in shape to run a bit faster over 5k (given a rabbit, no people in lane 1 to pass, and the fact he closed in :27), say 13:20-25. Quite a range, from 400 through 12k cross. It'll be interesting to see how his 800 SMR leg goes on Saturday.
he is running the 1500 at stanford
A definite step forward but keep in mind that El G ran sub 13:00 for 5k last year on his way to a 3:27 1500. Alan is advancing and has several more years to improve. I look forward to seeing the trend continue.
who says? Not Stanford athletics website.
wejo: Thanks for the report!
The guy ran 3:50.8 and the Prefontaine Classic last year (with a 1:51 opening 800m) off his endurance and strength with a handful of meets to sharpen up. He needs to keep working the strength and endurance all the way until just before the World Championship meet. Seriously, if continued his strength work, I think he will get close to Steve Scott's American record. I do see him running 3:49 this year.
Congrads to WEBB! Tinman
wait, you mean lagat's american record, right?
i don't know about 3:49 - perhaps in the right race - but i surely think 3:50 is on the cards.
At age 21, El Guerrouj ran 3:31. Webb ran 3:32. At age 22, El guerrouj ran 3:29. This appears to put Webb roughly on the same schedule. BTW, I guessed 13:35.
Lagat's PB of 3:47.65 was set a few years back
that's not offcial yet is it?
Great race with fairly meager conditions, considering the field.
By the end of the year the Morrocans and Kenyans will be very afraid of Alan Webb.
To all you naysayers - I'm sorry, Americans can run. Especially if they stay away from the NCAA's.
GO WEBB! And GO AMERICA!

"Afraid"? Let's just hope for "respectful" and not go overboard. Just being a serious threat for the podium all the way through Worlds would be huge. Let's not set the bar for success at "dominate the world."
"who says? Not Stanford athletics website"
Reading disability?

from the article...
Senior Don Sage will join a field of 1,500-meter runners that includes Alan Webb, famous for his record-setting high school indoor and outdoor miles and 1,500-meter marks
blah blah blah,
Nice try on linking to the student newspaper which posted that old news, since changed. Try reading the earlier posts next time. And then try linking to the actual athletic website.
Apology accepted anytime you want. Webb is not running at Stanford.

He ran 350 in the mile last year....he probably could have done 1330 last year as well. Not to mention like you said he finished 11th in xc over the 10k distance his freshman year...fresh off a 353 mile the spring before..think about that...he definatly could have ran 1330 the fall of his freshman year as well
