came across a workout that I did with Deek in Jan 1993 towards the end of his career: 5x1k at 2:53 average with 400 recovery in 1:35. A great runner but an incredibly nice guy!

If Deeks could have an OG gold medal in the marathon, it would have a topped up a great marathon career.

But did De Castella have an inefficient running action specifically his arm action?
Could he have run faster and be more energy efficient.
If you look at the linked video, Carlos Lopes appears more compact and wasting less energy with his form.
Maybe due to this inefficient action, Deeks has a slower PB than Lopes and Jones.
Makes sense haha.

Alberto Salazar's action wasn't pretty.
Hiromi Taniguchi's form looked awkward.
Gidamis Shahanga also looked weird.
It just shows you there is more than one way to get it done.
Not everyone can run fast in a marathon and be compact like Bikila, Wolde, Shorter, Cierpinski and Lopes.
"A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, push himself even more." - Steve Prefontaine.
Taniguchi has a faster marathon PB than De Castella as well.
Taniguchi's form is much worse than De Castella's form.

De Castella's arm action probably allowed him not to strain his arm over the course of a race and helped him generate forward momentum.
I wouldn't call it a form break.
Wanjiru and Kipsang have low and whipping arm actions as well.

Someone said on a different thread that on a treadmill test when Rodgers tried to fix his arm swing his efficiency decreased. Something about his arm swing corrected imbalances else where. Would not be surprised if this was the case with Deek.

Exactly.
A runner's body composition influences their running action.
Thus, some run with high arm action or vice versa. Pretty much you're trying to find the most comfortable arm action which doesn't cause upper body fatigue as much as possible.
Wow, looks like Kawauchi's form. Kawauchi's got the same whip action with one of his arms.

He is the master of pain.
I reckon Salazar's arm action is more awkward than De Castella's arm action.
De Castella’s extra weight compared to other runners, he had to run with probably lead partially to the reason why he was not as fast as Lopes or Jones.
The arm action would have less of an effect in my opinion.
Deeks got very efficient at the end of the race.
That's what mattered in the days of racing instead of pacing.
Yes his arms were a little low early, but he was great coming in. Very strong lower body and not a willowy guy at all ever.
Deek’s upper body was a willowy a an Ethiopian.
De Casella most likely has one foot slightly larger than the other foot or one leg slightly longer than the other leg or there is significant disparity in coordination from left side to right side of his body.

The mustache made him look huge

Do any of you guys remember Densimo’s arm action? It was by far the worst and he was the first sub 2:07 when he won Rotterdam in the late 80’s

I believe the head to head record though between the three, Deek wins.
..Until you run faster than Rob De Castella you have zero credibility to dis Rob's running action. There are some real assclowns on this board who continue to disrespect these top athletes.

De Castella v Lopes v Jones in a marathon.
I'll take Lopes.
The man is one of the most complete runners of all time; track, XC and road.

Except when he is getting outsprinted by Deek at Rotterdam:
