What is the best way to improve raw speed? I am asking because I think I have a relatively good endurance while my speed sucks big time (e,g. my 400 PR is 74sec and my 1K is 3:15).
I am also quite bad when it comes to hills. Is the solution for that hill repeats or incorporating hills on my tempo and interval routes?
Drop the marathon (at least for a year or two) from your goal distances. Focus on improving your race times at 800m, 1500m and 3000m. If you haven't got such races available "race" time trials over such distances. Having 8/15/3 as goal distances will mean you can adjust your training in a few significant ways. No need for 20 mile long runs every week (if you are running 10 miles as a long run you can recover faster). Having the 800m as a race goal will mean thinking about the speed required for a fast 800 and changing your training to accommodate that.
After a while your 5k (and even 10k) times will improve to the stage that you might want to try marathons again. Having a faster 10k PR will make the pace of a sub-3 or whatever your goal is feel easier.
With hills, run your longer weekly run over a hilly course and run a hill repeats session as one of your hard days of the week.
