Study at Yale shows effects of age on performance:
https://www.runnersworld.com/health-injuries/a23845530/running-speed-decline-aging/
Essentially, you can still PR until 35 maybe 40 if you can avoid injury.
For me, 3 marathons:
2009: 3:16
2010: 2:58
2015: 3:06
Hoping to PR next spring by a significant amount.
Currently sitting at 42 marathons, number 36 (Houston 2017) is my current PR.
I've finished 11 marathons. My best time still stands from #1 though I was only 7 seconds off that in #5. Still working to set a new PR but I know time is running out on me.
I've started 8, finished 7, and also ran one race course as a hard time trial. Here's my progression:
1992 (age 27) - 3:35; ran it on a whim never having run further than 12 miles. This hurt. A lot. There was a lot of walking and crying the last six miles. :-)
1992 (age 27 still) - 3:15; ran one month later, better weather, now had one long run under my belt (i.e. the previous "race"), only one I ever finished feeling good
2000ish (age 35ish) - 3:01. Legs felt like hell at the end, swore I'd never run another.
2002 or 3 (age 38 or 39) - 2:52; time trial on the full course for the next month, felt pretty solid.
2002 or 2 (age 38 or 39) - 2:44, hard positive split, legs screaming at the end
2006 or 7 (age 41 or 42) - 2:42-low (lifetime PB), hilly, slightly downhill point to point course, finished with legs screaming.
2009 (age 44) - 2:42-high; I was pacing an elite lady. She dropped out at the half, I decided to continue and see if I could lower my PB. I could not
2009 (age 44) - 2:44; this is my last complete marathon
2010 (age 45) - DNF; dropped out on a hot day, maybe on track to finish 2:high or 3:low. I will never register for another marathon, I've always hated the distance
My lifetime PB came on try number 5 at age 41 or 42. Most of my other lifetime PBs were set ate age 43. The only exception is my best 400 was run the day before I turned 46. I'm low to mid-50s now, good race times are well in the rear view mirror, although I still love to run.
All my other race PBs are "better" than 2:42; I've always hated the marathon distance and each time swore I'd never run another. Memory is a funny thing though... it fades, concealing past painful events. Now I know for sure though, never another marathon for me, not in this life anyway.
I've run 11 marathons and my lifetime pr was set on my 4th marathon. Fall of 2009 to December of 2017. Gonna run another marathon in Philly next month.
2:24 (2009)

Run 2. PRed on 1st. Why ever run another one when I know I will never be able to run faster than I did in my 1st?

23 marathons, first 3:17, worst #2 - 3:38, broke 3:00 on #5, broke 2:50 on #9, set current PB on #14 - 2:38.
Afterwards set a goal of running sub 3h in every European state (with road marathon), which is logically still in progress. That bumped my numbers, naturally didn't go to the well in many marathons. Still, trying to break 2:35 this autmn. Hope it goes well, a PB of even 1s would be nice.
My PR is 1 second faster than my next fastest! I took it and was very happy with it.
