Sara won the 5000 at Oregon in 16:04. Not bad for her first track race this year. Actually it might be her first outdoor race since 2003, I don't remember her competing in outdoor last year.
Speaking of Slatterys, whats up with Steve? He seems to have been struggling the past year or so. Injured, sick, coaching not working? Not bashing his running, just curious as to why he seems to be having some trouble.
Steve had a tough Olympic Trials where he was one of the favorites to make the team. Perhaps it si tough to come back from that? He ran a good 5k indoors and Mt. Sac went decent. He ran a steeple real early out in Arizona around 8:45. Not sure where he'll run next, but his 3:50 1500 at Oregon might just be a way for him to be able to watch his wife race? The team will be tough to make in the steeplechase with Lincoln, Fam and then Desiliets, Fiesta, Mort, and a bunch of college guys!
Sara is healthy and completing her Master's at CU in two weeks
I was down in Eugene visiting a friend this weekend and we decided to go down to the Oregon Invite. We were standing on the rail before the womens 5, when this girl comes bolting out of the waiting area going "Is that the 5? Is that the 5? Hold up!" She had about 45 seconds to get out of her sweats and get to the line about 150 meters away. Not following track that closely anymore I didn't know who it was, turned about to be Slattery, pretty nice race for barely making it! She was quite a bit down to this girl from ASU for most of the race, but came back to win pretty easily.
There were two girls who came running down the track right before the start and they were both from ASU including Hastings who led the entire race and then ended up getting 2nd. A very gutsy race. Sara sat back with the rabbit (kelly Strong) and didnt do any work until she dropped out at 4000m, yet Amy Hastings still was leading the pack at that point.
