You should not assume that the mother identifies as female. Pretty presumptuous of you.

Forget the times look at the accomplisments. All things equal Schul outkicks Rupp and Solinsky. Maybe i am getting old but what did solinsky do in the Olympics. By your logic Joe Louis would lose to one of the K brothers. People talk about Teg And Ritz very fine runners but overall not in the at 5000 as anyone on the list. Dick Burkle would have beaten either one 3 out of 4.

Are you kidding me??? Dick Buerkle??? You can't "Forget the times", its a combination of times and accomplishments to be considered among the best.
Bob Kennedy is hands down the "Greatest" American 5000m runner in history. Look at his accomplishments, times, and longevity and was never was accused or associated with doping.

When did I say the mother identified as female? Who says a mother has to be female? Is a man incapable of mothering?
Your response is discursively violent. I should probably use the report feature. You have been warned!

Dieter has the fastest non-African time. Kennedy was the first.
B. Lagat ran 12:53 as an American so he has the fastest non-African time.

Not quite sure as to the sexist charge but the female names being suggested do not have the creds of the list. This would not be the case at 10,000 meters .
You're claiming Mary Decker doesn't have enough creds? She was much stronger internationally at .. well, everything, than everyone on that list, except Lagat in the mile/1500.
Interesting the way things work out. I was browsing through my book shelevs the other day and came across Liquori's training book (well worth a read, by the way). For some reason I started to think about what he could have achieved if injury had not prevented him running in the Olympics of 1972 and 1976. Possibly too slow over 800 to medal at 1500 in Munich but it is easy to see him a a major factor (medalist?) over 5000 in Montreal.

Salazar
Rupp
Solinsky
Padilla
Kennedy
Goucher
Liquori
Dillenger
Schul
Bickford
Ritz seems to be the forgotten man in these discussions.
BK dominated the US in the 5000m for so long and ran many low 13 5ks, and his 12:58 would have been the WR something like 18mo earlier.
Of course I'm biased being a HS runner in the 90s.

Come on. Rupp is anywhere from #3 - #5
Rupp isn't even top 10. You need to have a kick to be a great 5k'er.
American....Really?
Jim Beatty and Lindgren should get some level of conversation. Rudy Chapa if we take the list to 15.
Only two Americans, Bob Schul and Marty Liquori, have been ranked #1 in the world at 5000m. There's #1 and #2.

Can't let the faked A test go, can you socal cush? Please explain to all of us why you decided not to get tested after set your age-group record? Afraid you would certainly fail the test? The best way not to test positive is to not let yourself be tested at all. Right, cush?
for the record, pt. 1: i like the original poster's list--besides, it's hard to ever be definitive with these things.
for the record, pt. 2: i've got a soft spot for kennedy, since he's from my era (the 90s, which means 90s guy would be a better pseudonym for me). i don't know anyone who competed against him who would accuse him of being dirty, either; i would argue he got pulled by the dopers, just like many athletes are today.
for the record, pt. 3: i've used a pseudonym once on these boards (many years ago), and once only. even then, i couldn't find the shift key...
for the record, pt. 4: i've never accused lagat of being dirty. i've only insinuated it...
for the record, pt. 5: i'll be spectating at oxy tomorrow night, where i ran the aforementioned age-group record (though at a meet earlier in the season in 2013, and no testing was required, nor available). i know the offer's a little late, but i will be available to pee in a cup if you still want it...
that's my story and i'm sticking to it,

Kennedy hung out with the Kim McDonald crowd, so of course he was dodgy.
The American's have had some of the greatest 5k runners around, Bob Schul, Bill Dillenger, but I'm still a huge fan on PRE. He was to young to die for US Track and Field. Most distance runners peak or start to really run their best at 26 to 28 and Pre never got there. I love everyone else on the list but Pre did beat some of them plus NCAA titles - 3 Xcntry & 4 3 mile (5000) titles.
