REM can't compare to the longevity of U2. They don't have the fire power up front or the depth either... I love REM, but they're no U2.
agreed, love both, but look at where U2 is now, and where REM is now. Even in the past they didnt compare. Both excellent bands.
Rem was always better until that last cd or two. They've completely lost the plot now, and I so hate to say that.
REM CDs hit my CD player a little more frequently than U2 CDs so I guess I'd give the edge to REM on personal preference. Can't really explain it, except REM's albums are probably a little more complete for the most part. On live performance I'd have to give the edge to U2, though. But only slightly.

I really just wanted to send that compliment.
Otherwise, I will say that the J. Tree is among my favorite albums. I've always said that if I had to got to the proverbial island and could only take 10 cds, that would be one of them. It has meant new things to me at each and every stage of my life. Brilliant. In my mind, its almost too good, because nothing they've done before or since has matched it. They've done good music for sure, but they were really on their game with that one.

I must be slightly younger than you (either in years or in music-years).
Reckoning, Document, Joshua Tree are all great albums but to me, Achtung Baby and Automatic for the People are both (1) the best album by each band and (2) two of the top 5 albums I've ever heard. In either case, this is a hard question since both bands are high quality and have a long list of albums. The interesting thing to me is that both bands have 2 greatest hits albums and each is tremendous.
I think U2 is far more of an iconic rock band that REM ever was -- if you take "Automatic For The People" out of the equation, I'm not convinced they match up with the boys from South Dublin. (Even if you take Unforgetable Fire out of the mix as well).
"Sunday, Bloody Sunday" and "Where the Streets Have No Name" were **important** songs with subtle (and not-so-subtle) political messages.
U2 is a stadium rock band with a global following, tremendous political influence and nearly unmatched longevity.
REM is, at best, a short time player on the world stage and, at worst, a soild American college town band with a smattering of Billboard hits and lucky number 1s (the terrible, deplorable, tinny disgrace know as "Radio Song").

U2 are a better band than REM, but Bono is the biggest knob in history. John Treacy is also a pompous ass so I guess your comparison is justified.

What happened to "Fables of the Reconstruction"?. Also, and I completely recognize this is a taste thing, "Achtung Baby" below "Automatic for the People"? Though horribly overplayed, "One" may be a better song than anything by REM, and this is from a guy who was singing along to "End of the World" in his car just last night!
