Aspiring Surgeon: I started med school with the intent of going into surgery as well-specifically trauma. Guess what? I f***ing hated every second of it as a 3rd year med student, and I had the highest grade in my med school class in gross anatomy. You will have plenty of time to select and rationalize your way through a specialty during years 3 and 4. To answer your questions about post residency hours, well that depends on the individual surgeon. If you are an academic surgeon at a major teaching institution then you are going to put in long hours, and for less pay then your private practice cohorts are making. When I was a resident, surgery spots were very tough to match into, although I think that has softened to some extent now. Ortho, I think, is still tough to match into. The bottom line is that while surgery looks glamorous on tv you may turn out like me and hate every second of it. Whatever residency field you select you can count on long hours, reduced running mileage, relatively poor wages for the hours worked as a resident and the feeling of being overwhelmed. Good luck in whatever field you decide.
