For STATE Taxes.
I know federal is free.
Turbotax charges $29.95 for state--is there anything cheaper?
See if your state has something. In Virginia I was able to log on to a state website. More work as had to reenter info, but saved myself the $30 that turbotax was going to charge.
Spend a buck you cheap bastard. What the hell is $30?
There may be other ways, but VANGUARD offers TurboTax Fed and State for half off the regular price, and Efiling is included in that price.
It is too late for this year, but you can open any kind of investment account at Vanguard and then you get this every year in February, March and April.
I don't know the minimum and I think it varies for different accounts, but you can call VANGUARD and see. Excellent place for mutual funds, IRA's, even money market accounts.
I thought Turbo tax charged 14.95 for each of efiling Fed and State and you get a rebate for the fed. So wouldn't efiling through turbotax cost just 14.95?
Is the Vanguard deal just for Turbotax on the web? If so, no thanks - with all the security breaches going on.
i efiled with taxslayer. it's free if you're 25 or under. or old. or made less that dirt for the year.
if not, it's $9.95
go to the irs.gov site then it will link you to the other sites.
Go to the irs.gov website. They have a new program that will allow you to e-file for free. You can choose from a number of authorized tax programs (such as Turbo Tax), and do your taxes on a web-based platform. You file the taxes and everything for free, I believe.
I imagine the only downside is that the company you use will have your e-mail address to spam you with...
hmm, just tried that, but it doesnt allow me to enter any self-employment income, or maybe i missed something, but i followed all the instructions. i think the free filing is only for a straight 1040, and doesnt allow for additional schedules C and SE.
thanks, but im not looking for free federal filing--theyre all free. this is about STATE filing.
I just did mine online this week. Can't say I really enjoy doing it over the 'net, but it worked well.
well i had done a full draft of my 1040 on paper and copied all of it to an online form. when i was done, it turns out i missed a deduction in my paper draft, so now im paying $200 less than i would have if i just mailed in the form.
it's alot easier to miss things on the paper forms and make errors--with online filing, youre prompted and forced to answer all the questions.
