I am not on the Harvard women's distance team, however I have interacted with their members, former members, and the men's distance team in the past year, and from my experience I can say that the team environment is frightening. There is a lot of tension and fear amongst athletes, and the team is their life. They aren't allowed to do anything besides school and running. Also, do we all remember the workout video from earlier this year (before it was edited), and the threads/posts on this website that were deleted?
DI athletes whose lives are consumed by academics and athletics? I've never heard of such a thing!
Any turnaround is going to involve a change in culture, and that will always ruffle some feathers. Frankly, the feathers that get ruffled are generally those of the individuals who were a part of the culture problem to begin with.
I've been a part of turnarounds in the business world. It's pretty much expected that a whole lot of employees will leave when a company that is circling the drain is brought back to financial stability. The exodus of old employees with the rebirth of the company is a sign that the old system was broken, not that the new CEO is wrong. Same applies to athletic teams.
Just be happy that the people who don't fit into a winning culture are gone, and the new recruits to come will be a better fit.
