Did Sebastian Coe blood dope?

What exactly do you want to get from this? Some people will say he did. Some will say he didn't. You have already made the case that he might have using circumstantial evidence, and then immediately you pointed out that the evidence proves nothing. Do we need a lengthy thread to be as inconclusive?

Don't forget the steroids, that are quite useful for distances up to 1500, and that were extensively used in the 80s without positive tests.

And then compare Coe's times to those of other Europeans in the current decade, factoring the progress in training, nutrition, technology such as altitude tents and vitamin IVs, shoes and track as well as stricter drug testing.

I never saw the problem with blood doping- it's your own blood.

Rumor also has it that the original printing of his dad's book, "Winning Running" actually contained a section on blood transfusions (it wan't illegal yet) ---Of course, all first editions have mysteriously disappeared from existence, not to even to be found at used bookstores around the world. Sleuths, go find first edition and report back!!!

"Winning Running" was published in 1996 over a decade after blood doping was banned.

You're whole argument false starts because blood doping was banned in 1985 not 1986, and he ran his fastest 1500m in late 86, at a time when blood doping was banned. Moreover, the decision of the IAAF to ban blood doping, was at the advice gathered and published by Coe himself (along with UK Sports' Minister, Moynihan) in a White Paper on behalf of the British Sports Council.

He was injured all 87 and in 88, while aiming for a peak in October, he got ill and was not selected. Still managed to run 1:43 at 31, and the following year, his last, ran 1:43.3 for 2nd fastest in the world and was only narrowly beaten by the then World Champion, Bile, in the 1500 World Cup, a couple of weeks before he turned 33. His longevity at the very top level lasted a lot longer than Ovett or Cram.

I think running 1:43.3 at 32/33 is in keeping with someone who managed 1:41.7 at 24.

Lol. Well that is exactly how rumours spread isn't it!

The rumour proposed on here re that book, was that it advocated EPO not blood transfusions. So either you have a bad memory of what you've read or else you're purposely trying to start a splinter rumour yourself?

We have no real idea who blood doped and who didn't. From what we gather the Finns invented it in 1969 while treating an anemic steeplechaser, by 1972 it was winning medals (probably Viren & Vasala), it is alleged that Cierpinski might have been blood doping. I have my suspicions about others particularly Straub 1980, Moorcroft 1982 and Aouita to name a few. The problem is that blood doping was originally seen to benefit the 5k and upwards. My personal view was that if Coe was blood doping he would have produced better 3k and 5k times. Toxoplasmosis might be a weak explanation, because doesn't it require the blood donor to has toxoplasmosis? Coe was about speed and explosiveness which would hint that he was either on the roids or he was completely clean.

Blood doping doesn't guarantee better performance.

I'm pretty sure Renato Canova said it helped some Italian athletes such as Alberto Cova while it lowered performances of others.

By the way, was blood doping banned in 1985 or 1986?

Coe invented dope testing and had himself tested lots of times to prove he was clean
