That makes sense, so, in reality, the conditioning is not there to maintain SPEED endurance for the second half of a marathon. My thinking was if I run 5ks to half marathons for about 6 years, that would prepare my body to maintain speed and endurance for a full marathon( on top of increasing training mileage). But one thing I didn't think about for that particular subject - which I always think about and talk about - is the biological aspect of it. I have never run in a state of Ketosis, where my body has to depend on fat for fuel. You're right, a lot of people hit a wall once that level is reached, causing one's performance to decline with 7 or 8 miles to go in a marathon.
