Maybe that kid should go join the jogging club. Coaches are trying to actually develop a good team and cater to the athletes who can handle the workouts it takes to be good. It's hard to simultaneously babysit the kids who can only handle 3 miles a day without getting hurt. If I have an extra assistant who can work with those kids, then fine. But I know where I'm going to be spending my time.
That's a really brilliant idea "Hot shot high school coach."🤔. So, for some kids who enjoy running, but can't handle the "one size fits all" and "everybody has to run together team concept," your solution is to just go join a "jogging club?" This on top of the sudent having to pay a $100.00 spring sport admin fee, and going to a tax-payer funded school.
And why would a coach have to babysit the kids? What about non-weight bearing excercise with a spin bike, elliptical, swimming, etc? (though I'm an old fart runner with a significant injury history, I do a lot of spin cycling so I can still run 15-20 mpw and run a few races now & then). A coach once told me; "if I let one kid skip a workout to ride the bike, the others kids will be asking to do the same, and I'll lose control." There's your dictatorship with some coaches!
Final thought: Rational debate is useless. Coaches don’t have time for it, and they don’t base their actions on it. Therefore, they just want to shut parents up when they say what you don’t want them to say.
